L’incoronazione di Poppea Claudio Monteverdi
L'immortale inno all'Amore nel capolavoro monteverdiano
The coronation of Poppea Claudio Monteverdi The immortal hymn to love in the Monteverdi masterpiece The Director Federico Bardazzi outlines the characters through an expressive analysis of the score, emphasizing with the different colors of the continuum the multiform "affects" that permeate the work. The coronation of Poppea, the last extraordinary masterpiece composed by Monteverdi for the theater, is one of the most mysterious and interesting titles in the history of melodrama. The first work that left the skies of mythology to descend into the dimension of human passions, with characters who really existed. The final effect is of surprising intensity.

Federico Bardazzi at the helm of the excellent Arché Orchestra confirmed the more than positive impressions he had a couple of weeks ago with his conducting of the Triumph of Honor by Alessandro Scarlatti. The opera was staged this time in the actual theater (with conductor and orchestra in front of the audience and not in the pit) Bardazzi conducted with commendable precision, but also with a warmth that allowed the music to live and beat, producing a sound rich, full-bodied and at the same time extremely sharp.

Interesting publication Clavis Roman publisher dedicated to ancient music Vespers of Santa Cecilia by F. M. Stiava The interpretation that Bardazzi has extracted from the high voices of his vocal ensemble is of a brightness never heard in the performance of a Gregorian: it seems here something else, truly a celestial appendage, with perfect intonation and vocal softness, while the Latin verses follow one another without stumbling and without boredom, as could happen in other similar executions. And this reading of a rich and animated Gregorian, also baroque in the end, is absolutely introductory to the exuberantly baroque writing of the psalms of Stiava, where a great and showy virtuosity is required. vocal to all interpreters.

From the beginning you can see the skill and precision of the Ensemble. Nothing is easy to do, but the yield is really excellent. maggio 2008 Tokafi: Concert Report Ensemble San Felice: "Handel - Rodrigo"
Live at St John's Smith Square, London, May 17th 2008. Even though reverence for his work has long stood in the shadow of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, Handel has been the man for this year's Lufthansa Festival up until now. His arias left a devastating impression on the first night and Rodrigo represents by far the most spectacularly staged performance of the entire week. With a special addendum to the program notes coming in flashy colors and with screaming neo-punk imagery, it is in fact a statement of historical correctness, musical discovery and of 21st century< fashion at the same time.
What I find so convincing about an “original practice” approach like the one directed by Federico Bardazzi and his good-humored and aptly titled Ensemble San Felice (who are all smiles during the performance) is that it shows the power of minimalism and how much can be achieved without the pomp of a humoungous line-up. Separated into a small orchestra at the left (which lays down sensitive accompaniments in the arias) and an agile recitative trio on the right (who are just as passionate and energetic as their counterparts), the musicians develop a sound capable of depicting a wide range of emotions, from the tender to the furious, from the joyous to the depressed. The players even find themselves integrated into the theatrical action, as Bardazzi is gently “abused” for a stone pillar by Soprano Laura Cherici.
One of the San Felice's is playing his violin amidst the crowds leaving St. John's at the end, sending them home with a musical souvenir and you can still hear people whistling some of the themes on the street blocks away from the church. Even though these will be the last notes of Handel for the Lufthansa Festival until it heads for Westminster Abbey on its final night, the former citizen of London is still “the man” in a city which has never forgotten him. By Tobias Fischer

maggio 2008 Classical Source Lufthansa Festival of Baroque Music - Handel‚s Rodrigo
Reviewed by: Kadir Hussein,
Rodrigo is one of only two operas (the other being Agrippina) that Handel wrote in Italy. He was 22 years old and learning his craft. Thus much of the music is conventional and could have been written by any decent composer of the period.
This sold-out, semi-staged performance was part of the Lufthansa Festival of Baroque Music and, unusually for a Handel opera, an Italian cast performed it. The orchestra was superb, with wonderful contributions first violin, first cello and the first recorder. Federico Bardazzi conducted with grace and enthusiasm.

The focal point of this project, explains Federico Bardazzi, artistic director of the initiative together with Enzo Ventroni, is the dissemination of Gregorian chant to a heterogeneous public formed by specialists but above all to those who wish meet even without specific preparation, for a first approach, this repertoire. The truth, explains Federico Bardazzi, is that there is a great need for spirituality that leaks into our society even if it is apparently hidden. In the lasts For decades, inter-religious dialogue has brought young people closer to other cultures as well. Here, in Gregorian chant you can find those elements that our children have been looking for somewhere else. Gregorian is a declamation of the word of God through sound, it is one symbiosis between text and music. And the word thus proclaimed causes a strong reverberation in the soul of the listener. And young people feel this and that is why they approach them repertoires.

Thanks to the festive riot of voices for the nativity according to Bach Federico Bardazzi, careful, putiglioso, dnamico conductor, has shown that he conceives the Christmas Oratorio as a unitary organism with its own expressive and spiritual development that proceeds hand in hand with the narration, scrolling seamlessly through the first three cantatas that make up the masterpiece Bachiano. Bardazzi made his debut admirably impressing the first cantata with the climate of anxious expectation for the Nativity to reach, with a gradual and expressive crescendo, the final jubilation. The birth of Christ therefore read not only as a supernatural mystery but also as an extraordinary historical event, well underlined by the martial rhythm of the eardrums and by the flashing and luminous sound of the natural trumpets. Wonderful the splashes of color that the conductor has been able to draw from the variegated instrumental palette, such as the pasty and soft interventions, with the unmistakable pastoral trait, of the love oboes and hunting oboes. If the instrumental performance was exciting, nevertheless it was that of the choir which presented a staff that even simulated the intervention of the assembly of the faithful, according to the most rigorous Lutheran tradition.

14th December 2006 - Eco di Bergamo
In Santa Maria delle Grazie festive rejoicing voices celebrated Bach's Christmas Oratorio. Federico Bardazzi, a meticulous, determined and dynamic conductor perceives the Oratorio as a unitary organism with its own expressive and spiritual development that proceeds in step with the narrative, flowing seamlessly over the first three cantatas that make up Bach's masterpiece.
Bardazzi opened the Oratorio by colouring the first cantata with an air of anxious expectancy, which gradually lead, in a crescendo of expression, to the concluding jubilation.
The birth of Christ therefore, seen not only as a supernatural mystery, but also as an exceptional historical event, emphasised by the martial rhythm of the timpani and the flashing and sonorous luminosity of the natural trumpets.
Bardazzi drew marvellous splashes of colour from the variegated instrumental palette, like the soft, mellow sound and pastoral flavour of the oboes d'amore and oboes da caccia.
The orchestra's performance was enthralling, and so was that of the choir who even simulated the participation of the congregation, according to the strictest Lutheran tradition.

More recently, a magnificent Holy Week festival celebrating sacred music from around the world has been held in the imposing Romanesque church of Santo Stefano al Ponte Vecchio. The Settimana di Musica Sacra dal Mondo (World Sacred Music Week) is organised by the Accademia di San Felice, a musical 'academy' based at Fiesole under the artistic direction of Andrea Cavallari and Federico Bardazzi.
The festival opens on Friday 7 April with music by a composer whose religious devotion inspired a truly divine harmony - JS Bach.   The Accademia's resident early music group, Ensemble San Felice, will recreate a Lutheran service for Palm Sunday, the day of Christ's fêted and fateful entry into Jerusalem. The programme pairs Bach's radiant Mass in G minor BWV 235 with the cantata for Palm Sunday 'Himmelskönig sei willkommen' ('King of Heaven, thou art welcome') BWV 182, a jubilant 'welcome allegory', perfectly apposite for this opening event.

Ensemble San Felice celebrated the anniversary of Carissimi with a perfomance in semi-staged and costumed interpretation of three of his oratorios, together with instrumental intermezzi. There was an attractive singing.

In the late renaissance a new kind of improvisation arose, consisting of embellishements spun over harmonic patterns. The predominant colour was the rich thrumming of lutes and harps. We heard them in semi-staged Oratorios from Ensemble San Felice.

Yet again Federico Bardazzi's conducting was impeccable, and yet again he demonstrated his excellence both as a musician and a conductor.

Although Professor Bardazzi and the Ensemble San Felice are to be   roundly applauded for the exuberant performances and skillful organization evident on Nigra sum sed Formosa, their most significant achievement is the meticulous approach evident with regard to musical authenticity. Since the original codex was sketchy concerning precise instrumentation, great care was necessary in order to arrive at the most appropriate choices for each   setting. The CD? liner notes present convincing historical evidence to justify these choices.

An extremely intense spiritual delight.
The Ensemble, made up of eleven musicians gathered round their founder Federico Bardazzi, performed the reconstruction of a 13th century Florentine liturgical drama.
The work was originally part of the Easter Liturgy described by the medieval codex housed in the archives of the Episcopal See in Florence.
The group first presented the reconstruction of the liturgical drama in their German tour, which is still taking place.
The no frills clarity and simplicity of the Gregorian Chant was emphasised by the clear and precise voices of the singers.
Flitting lightness alternated with contemplative concentration, resulting in an evening of spiritual and musical pleasure of great depth and intensity.

The concert on Friday evening by the Ensemble San Felice from Florence was a conspicuous success: the perfection in the way the four singers blended their voices was very impressive, particularly in the Gregorian Chant.
Federico Bardazzi underlined the rhythmic movement with pleasantly undulating lines. In his conducting he paid particular attention to the details of the rhythms and the distribution and shading of the voices.
The meticulousness and discipline that distinguish the work of the Ensemble are extremely evident. A touch of colour was added by the instrumental parts, often played like minstrels.
The instruments could be heard in continuously renewed and fascinating combinations of sound. The saltarelli played between the cantari of Cicerchia were fiery and virtuosic. The audience thanked the Ensemble for the charming evening by applause that never seemed to end.

Audiences do not always have the time to think about the pleasure they expect and hope to feel in listening to a concert. Bardazzi, who has gathered together a group of excellent musicians in his Ensemble, managed to create an atmosphere of concentration.
At the beginning clear female voices, with no vibrato, broke the silence with a beautifully homogeneous sound. Perfection characterised the whole evening. There was perfection in the tuning of the instruments, in the way the music was directed and the sounds that chased each other, swirling extraneous to the harmony and contemplative hymns; but, above all, it was the style of conducting that demonstrated a common path for music and text, bonded with the rhythmic elements. These are values that do not come from the rhythmic system we are familiar with, but from the text and its expression. The very high level of performance forced the listener to participate with all his senses, magically but relentlessly.

...the listener must give up all critical distance. The entire evening was perfect. Perfection in the tuning of the instruments, in the cascading sounds swirling like a vortex disembodied from the contemplative hymns, but especially in the direction which showed uncanny musical execution and text, fused to rhythmic elements.
The Knights Chamber becomes pilgrimage for the lovers of music
Another beautiful Christmas concert in the castle with Accademia San Felice. The fact that the room was packed can be explained by the program (Iberian music from the High Middle Ages) called El Cant de la Sibilla and perhaps by Ensemble's repeated ability to dramatize the music dynamically and to transmit tangibly the ambiance and performance practices of the epoch.

Bellezza mistica
Mystical beauty
Particularly impressive was the very first public performance of Magnificat   by the Italian composer Andrea Cavallari, who was in attendance, and the Magnificat für gemischten Chor   by Arvo Pärt (born 1935).
